Farm Fences That Hold on Northwest Hillsides


Steep Northwest hillsides are tough on farm fence systems. Gravity pulls on wire, rain chases soil downhill, and livestock push and rub on anything that stands in their way. On these slopes, a fence is not just a line in the dirt; it is a structure that has to work with the hill, the water, and the animals.


Without terraced, erosion-control planning, things go bad fast. Posts start to lean or heave, wire sags and buckles, corners wash out after late winter and spring storms, and bare mud paths form along the fence line. When that happens, animals test the weak spots, and repairs become a regular chore.


On Northwest hillsides, especially in Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington, farm fence systems need to be engineered more like hillside structures, not flat pasture fences. Late summer is a great time to plan and build, while access is good and the ground is dry enough to work but not frozen solid. Reading Your Slope Before You Set a Single Post


Good hillside fencing starts long before the first post hole. It starts with walking the ground and learning how that slope behaves in every season.


As you walk the planned fence line, pay close attention to:


  • Slope direction and steepness

  • Natural drain paths and low spots

  • Seep areas that stay damp into summer

  • Livestock trails that already cut across or along the hill


Those trails and drains are future erosion channels. If a fence crosses one without a plan, water and hooves will dig it deeper and begin to expose posts.


On Northern Idaho’s and Washington’s hillsides, you often see a mix of:


  • Rocky glacial till, where posts may hit big rock and need drilling or driving

  • Loamy forest soils that drain fairly well but can slump on steep faces

  • Clay pockets that hold water and turn slick, pushing posts around as they swell and shrink


Each soil type changes how deep you set posts and how you anchor them. Clay and soft loam usually call for deeper holes and better drainage. Shallow, rocky soils may need pipe posts or driven posts instead of digging wide, shallow holes that can wash out.


Simple layout tools can make a big difference. A basic builder’s level or laser, a handful of stakes, and a good string line let you:


  • Mark high and low spots

  • Plan step-down points

  • Decide where you might add short terraces or small retaining blocks


Think ahead about high-traffic spots. Gates, corners near water troughs, and areas where animals bunch up will see the most hoof impact and water flow. Those areas need stronger posts, better footing, and a little extra thought about where water will go.


Smart Post Spacing for Steep, Erosion-Prone Fields


On flat ground, it is tempting to stretch post spacing as wide as the fence fabric will allow. On slopes, that usually backfires. Soil moves more, tension changes with grade breaks, and animals press harder on the lower side.


In general, on steeper hillsides and in wet soils you want:


  • Closer post spacing than you would use on level ground

  • Deeper-set line posts, especially on the downhill side

  • Stronger end, corner, and brace assemblies at every major grade or direction change


For common hillside farm fence systems:


  • T-posts often need to be closer together on steep runs, especially with woven wire that can carry a lot of tension

  • Wood line posts give more stiffness and can be spaced a bit wider than T-posts, but still tighter on slopes than in flat pastures

  • Pipe posts are helpful in rocky or high-pressure areas, like corners, gates, or tight bends


Different livestock matter too. Sheep and goats push under and test wire differently than cattle, so the bottom spacing and number of wires or fabric style change. That often means slightly closer posts and more attention to low spots where they might slip through.


Braced assemblies and deadman anchors are your friends on hills. Use them:


  • At the top and bottom of long steep runs

  • At every sharp turn or change in direction

  • Where the grade breaks sharply and tension shifts


While closer spacing and deeper posts add some upfront work, they usually save time and money later by cutting down on repairs after runoff, thaw cycles, and wind events pull things out of line.


Step-Down Fence Layouts That Follow the Hill, Not Fight It


Slopes force you to choose between two basic layouts: racked or stepped. Racked fences keep the rails or fabric roughly parallel to the slope. Stepped fences run in horizontal sections that “step down” the hill a bit at a time.


For many agricultural uses on steep ground, a stepped layout is cleaner and stronger, especially with woven wire and panel systems. The key is planning consistent vertical drops between posts so the fence looks straight and stays tight.


When we design step-down layouts, we focus on:


  • Keeping corner and brace posts perfectly plumb, even if the ground falls away

  • Setting each run as a level “section,” then dropping down at planned step points

  • Preventing gaps under the bottom wire where young or small livestock can slip under


Common Northwest hillside patterns include:


  • Fencing across a ridgeline, where wind and water roll off both sides

  • Dropping down a draw, where water wants to run straight under the fence

  • Running along a contour, which often slows water and helps protect soil


Running near the contour instead of straight up and down can help reduce water speed and spread flow out. That lowers the risk of washouts and bare mud tracks.


Custom fabrication can also solve tough gaps. Welded pipe panels, custom-height gates, or extended skirt panels let you follow broken, rocky, or uneven ground without leaving odd openings that animals will find and test.


Washout Prevention for Long-Lasting Farm Fence Systems


Even a strong fence will fail if water chews the ground out from underneath it. Simple, low-tech erosion control around the fence line can make a big difference.


Helpful ideas include:


  • Shallow swales above the fence to catch and slow runoff

  • Small rock check dams in existing drain paths to reduce water speed

  • Grassed waterways or seeded strips that hold soil in place

  • Low diversion berms that guide water around posts instead of straight through them


Construction choices matter too. To help protect posts, it often pays to:


  • Flare or bell the bottom of post holes in soft soils so posts cannot lift as easily

  • Use gravel backfill for drainage around wood posts instead of solid wet clay

  • Add concrete collars where needed, but avoid deep “bathtub” holes that trap water around wood


Aligning farm fence systems with natural contours and drainage lets water spread out and slow down, instead of racing straight down the fence. That helps prevent undercutting, sinkholes, and those deep muddy tracks that form along the lower side of the fence line.


Seasonal maintenance keeps all this working. A simple routine might look like:


  • Late summer checks for loose wires, leaning posts, and bare soil

  • Fall cleanup of leaves, branches, and silt caught at the fence

  • Early spring inspection for frost heave, new ruts, or undermined posts


Catching small issues early keeps them from turning into full washouts next storm season.

Steep hillsides will always test your fences, but good planning can shift things in your favor. Late summer and early fall usually offer the best window to design and build terraced, erosion-control farm fence systems while the ground is workable and access is easier.


The most successful steep-slope fences all share the same ingredients: a careful look at how the slope, soil, and water behave, adjusted post spacing for grade and ground, step-down layouts that follow the hill instead of fighting it, and simple water and erosion controls built in from the start.
